To ensure that you maintain great oral health, this level of quality needs to extend into your personal oral hygiene routine. Your teeth are not the only important part of your mouth. Your gums are essential to oral hygiene as well. • Silver Filling

  The Problem: A small amount of decay on a portion of a back tooth The Solution: A silver (or amalgam) filling is a mixture of approximately 50% silver/tin alloy and 50% mercury. After tooth decay is removed and cleaned, this gray colored material is packed into the tooth and shaped. Advantages: Silver fillings have been used for more than 125 years. Their biggest advantage is that they are quickly placed, making them relatively inexpensive. They are also relatively durable. Disadvantages: Silver fillings do not bond (stick) to the tooth structure. This requires the preparation to be "undercut," creating a chamber that is smaller at the surface of the tooth and wider inside. This undercut keeps the filling from falling out of the tooth. The problem is that the creation of this undercut requires the removal of more healthy tooth structure than is necessary. This weakens the tooth and predisposes it to fracture when biting into hard items. Since fillings will break down from normal wear, they will eventually need to be replaced, and this will require the removal of even more healthy tooth structure. Alternatives: Composite (white) fillings are an excellent alternative, limiting the removal of healthy tissue and posing no known environmental risk. In cases of extensive decay, inlays/onlays or crowns are a much better restoration.

• Composite Fillings

  The clear alternative to traditional mercury fillings The Problem: Decay on a portion of any tooth Desire to replace old-fashioned mercury (silver) fillings Desire to maintain a white, beautiful smile The Solution: A composite filling is a tooth colored quartz-like material. After tooth decay is removed and cleaned, this tooth colored material is layered into the tooth. Each layer is hardened or cured with highly intense visible light, and the final surface is shaped and polished to match the tooth. The final restoration is virtually invisible. Advantages: Composite fillings are more than just attractive. They are environmentally non-toxic because they use no mercury. They are stronger because they bond directly to the surface of the tooth. They protect the tooth from fracturing because they don't require the severe "undercut" (removal of healthy tooth structure) of a mercury filling. Disadvantages: The initial investment in a composite filling is higher than that for a mercury filling. This is due to the fact that the composite material is more expensive and the restoration is more difficult and time consuming to place. However, this initial higher investment is offset in the long run by the health benefits and reduced likelihood of restoring potentially fractured teeth. Alternatives: Inlays/onlays are sometimes good alternatives to composite fillings, offering excellent long term durability. In cases of extensive decay, inlays/onlays or crowns are the only alternative.

• Crowns

  Protect and keep badly decayed or fractured teeth The Problem: Badly decayed teeth Fractured teeth Need to protect and strengthen teeth The Solution: A crown (often called a cap) covers the tooth and restores it to its original shape and size. Decay is removed and cleaned from the tooth and a highly accurate impression or mold is made of the prepared surface. This mold is used to create a model of the tooth which is then sent to a special laboratory that will create a gold or porcelain (tooth colored) crown. The crown is then cemented onto the prepared surface of the tooth. Advantages: Crowns are incredibly strong due to the fact that they are created in a laboratory. This protects and strengthens the remaining tooth structure. In the hands of a skilled dentist, a crown will fit almost perfectly onto the prepared surface of the tooth, reducing the size of the seam between the crown and the tooth. This helps keep decay from eventually occurring under the crown. Crowns should be placed before the tooth is so decayed that it may fracture. This can often help prevent the expense of root canal therapy in the future. It can also prevent the possibility that a fractured tooth may need to be removed, requiring the expense of a bridge or implant to replace the missing tooth. Disadvantages: Crowns are excellent restorations and have few disadvantages. They are highly durable, but they will eventually need to be re-cemented or replaced due to normal wear. Occasionally, a tooth may still need root canal therapy after being crowned. However, this indicates that the interior of the tooth was already sick (infected) and would have eventually needed root canal therapy anyway. Alternatives: In the event that a tooth is so decayed or fractured that it needs to be removed, the best alternatives to a crown are bridges and implants that replace the missing tooth.

• Bridges

  Fixed Bridges A great way to replace missing teeth The Problem: A missing tooth or teeth Potential bite and jaw joint problems from teeth shifting to fill the space The "sunken face" look associated with missing teeth Desire to improve chewing ability Desire for a more permanent solution than dentures The Solution: A bridge is a single appliance that is generally attached to two teeth on each side of the space where a tooth is missing. An artificial tooth attached in the middle of the bridge fills in the gap where the missing tooth was. The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for crowns (see crowns) and a highly accurate impression or mold is made of the prepared area. This mold is used to create a gold or porcelain (tooth colored) bridge in a special laboratory. The bridge is then cemented onto the prepared surface of the teeth, effectively creating the appearance of a "new" tooth. In some instances, a resin-bonded bridge may be used. In this case, the two teeth on each side of the gap are not prepared for crowns. Instead, the bridge consists of a false tooth with metal brackets on the back of each side of the gap. The brackets are attached to the backs of the real teeth on each side. Advantages: Unlike dentures, a fixed bridge is never removed. It is stable in the mouth and works very similar to natural teeth. By filling the gap and stopping the movement of other teeth, a fixed bridge is an excellent investment, providing better chewing ability, heading off jaw joint problems and saving money that might otherwise be spent on future dental treatment. Disadvantages: Fixed bridges are excellent restorations and have few disadvantages. They are highly durable, but they will eventually need to be re-cemented or replaced due to normal wear. Alternatives: In the event that the use of a fixed bridge is not feasible, the best alternative is a dental implant.

• Root Canals

  Protect and keep a sick or dying tooth The Problem: Infected or sick tooth due to decay or injury Chronic tooth pain from contact with hot and cold liquids Pain from pressure or biting down Danger of infection spreading The Solution: Inside each tooth is a pulp chamber that contains the nerves and blood supply for the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected due to decay or injury to the tooth, the pulp must be removed from the center of the tooth and the canals of each root. Once the infected pulp is removed, the remaining chamber is filled with a rubber-based material to seal it off. All teeth that have had root canal therapy must be protected with a tooth-like artificial covering known as a crown (see crown section.) This is because teeth that have had the pulp removed are more susceptible to fracture. Advantages: Root canal therapy is an excellent way to save a tooth that would otherwise die and need to be removed. Disadvantages: If a tooth is sick, there are no disadvantages to root canal therapy. On rare occasions, however, root canal therapy may need to be redone to ensure that all of the infection has been removed. Alternatives: The only real alternative is to remove the sick tooth. However, this will require a dental implant or bridge to fill the empty space and prevent the shifting of surrounding teeth. These solutions will ultimately cost more than the root canal therapy, and they will never equal the quality of keeping your natural tooth.

• Extractions

  A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth when all other treatment options are exhausted and the tooth is causing pain, swelling, or infection or when cavities or periodontal (gum) disease have progressed too far. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment. Simple Extractions Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, usually under local anesthetics, and require only the use of instruments to elevate and/or grasp the visible portion of the tooth. Typically the tooth is lifted using an elevator, and subsequently using dental forceps, rocked back and forth until the periodontal ligament has been sufficiently broken and the supporting alveolar bone has been adequately widened to make the tooth loose enough to remove. Surgical Extractions Surgical extractions involve the removal of teeth that cannot be easily accessed, either because they have broken under the gum line or because they have not erupted fully. In a surgical extraction the doctor may elevate the soft tissues covering the tooth and bone and may also remove some of the overlying and/or surrounding bone tissue with a drill or osteotome. Frequently, the tooth may be split into multiple pieces to facilitate its removal.

• Tooth Whitening

  Plastic whitening trays will be made from models of your teeth. You will then place a special whitening gel in each tray and wear the trays in your mouth for several hours per day. (Many patients wear their trays after dinner and before bed.) A significant change in tooth color is usually seen in just four to six weeks. Modern tooth whitening systems are highly effective and have dramatic results. Many celebrities consistently whiten their teeth to improve their appearance.

• Cosmetic Bonding

  Restore chipped teeth and fill gaps between teeth. The problem: Unsightly gaps between front teeth Slightly chipped teeth Rough or jagged edges on front teeth Dull colored or stained teeth The solution: Composite resin is a white, tooth colored material that can be shaded to match your teeth. This material is applied to your teeth and sculpted to cover or replace the problem area. The material bonds to the surface of your teeth like a glue. It is often "cured" or hardened with an intense ultraviolet light. Advantages: When skillfully applied and sculpted, this material allows you to have a natural, beautiful improvement in your smile. Disadvantages: Bonding is initially less expensive than porcelain veneers. However, it tends to break down and discolor in several years and will need to be replaced. For this reason, porcelain restorations are usually more cost effective over time Alternatives: Porcelain laminates or crowns are an excellent, longer lasting alternative.

  A porcelain laminate (often called a veneer) is a thin shell of porcelain that covers the front of each tooth. They bond directly to the front of the tooth, similar to the way artificial fingernails work. Each porcelain laminate is a work of art, carefully crafted in a laboratory to fit your individual smile. In the hands of a highly skilled dentist, porcelain laminates can provide you with an incredibly natural, beautiful smile. They are virtually undetectable and can dramatically improve your appearance. They are durable and long-lasting when compared to other cosmetic treatments.

• Dental Implants

  Dental implants are a permanent and appealing solution to replace missing or extracted teeth. They are better than other alternatives like bridges because no additional teeth need to be altered to place the new tooth. The entire implant process is performed over the course of a few months. The first part of the process is to install the implant itself, where a screw is placed into the jaw bone. An incision is made in the gum so that the implant can be inserted. Multiple implants can be placed at once if necessary. After the implants are placed the gums are sutured. The implant must be allowed about 3-6 months to heal, and during this time the jaw bone will form around the implant in a process called osseointegration. During this healing time you can have temporary crowns installed so that you can eat and speak normally and maintain a proper aesthetic appearance for your smile. After the implant has healed it is time to place an abutment on the implant. The abutment serves as the base for your new tooth. One this is placed an impression of the abutment is taken and is used to create your permanent restoration. Some offices have an onsite lab to create the crown, but others will have to send it to an outside lab. Once the restoration is completed you can return to the office to attach the restoration permanently. Your smile will look just like it used to, and after a short period of getting used to the implant it will feel just like one of your own teeth.

• Cleanings and Examinations

  Professional Cleanings Professional cleanings (dental prophylaxis) performed by a dentist or hygienist form the foundation for preventing gum disease and tooth decay. In a professional cleaning, your dentist or hygienist will: Remove plaque from the teeth – Plaque is a sticky substance that forms in the mouth from food, saliva and bacteria. Plaque sticks to teeth and causes tooth decay and gum disease. Remove calculus (tarter) above the gum line – Calculus is plaque that has hardened on the tooth surface and is difficult to remove. (Calculus below the gum line indicates gum disease and requires a different procedure to remove it.) Polish and remove stains from teeth Dental Examinations: Dental examinations help to diagnose disease before it becomes hazardous to your health. In addition, regular examinations can save you money by alleviating problems while they are small and before they become expensive to repair, or in some cases, impossible to repair. Your dental examinations generally include the following: Oral cancer screening Gum disease evaluation Visual examination of tooth decay Examination of diagnostic x-rays to see cysts, tumors, invisible decay and other problems that can't be seen by the naked eye Evaluation of status of current restorations (fillings and others) We cannot express enough how important it is to see your dentist regularly. Remember, preventing disease is always better than treating disease.

• Digital X-Rays

  Digital X-Rays (Radiographs) We are pleased to provide patients with the latest in advanced, digital radiography. How do Radiographs Help? Dental x-rays or radiographs are very important. They allow the dentist to see things about your oral health that cannot be seen by the naked eye. These items include cysts (sacks of fluid that form on the roots of teeth), cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, invisible decay that occurs between teeth, and the location of teeth that haven’t grown all the way in. By using an x-ray to diagnose these problems, we can help save you money in the long run from surgeries or other treatments that might become necessary if we didn’t find the problem. In some cases, where dental x-rays show the location of tumorous growths, x-rays can be responsible for saving your life. Advantages of Digital Radiography Digital x-rays have many advantages when compared with old fashioned film-based machines, including: Reduced radiation exposure (up to 90% less than traditional systems) Enhanced ability to refine image quality Instant viewing (no waiting for films to develop) Environmentally friendly (no toxic chemicals) Best of all, it’s easy for you to see what the doctor sees. Your digital x-ray can be seen on a computer screen located next to your dental chair. This helps you understand your needs and make and informed choice about any treatment.

• Sealants

  Protective Sealants Protect the chewing surface of teeth from decay The Problem: Protect normal pits and grooves on the chewing surface of back teeth Stop small amounts of decay from growing larger The Solution: Normal pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth can trap food that can't be removed by brushing or washed out by water or saliva. A sealant is a tough, plastic material designed to bond (stick) to tooth enamel. These clear or tooth colored sealants are painted onto the tooth surface to "seal" the pits and grooves and protect against decay. They are generally applied to children's first permanent back teeth. They can also be useful for adults in certain situations. Advantages: Sealants are an excellent way to protect chewing surfaces of teeth from decay. They are a much better financial investment than treating decay after it has started. Disadvantages: Sealants are not permanent. They generally last about five years with normal wear, but can wear off or chip off earlier in certain instances. Also, sealants do not prevent decay between teeth or the onset of gum disease, so regular home care and dental visits are important. Alternatives: There are no appropriate alternatives to sealants. If a tooth has decay, it will need a filling or other restoration.

• Gum Disease

  Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease) The most common cause of tooth loss Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is responsible for about 70 percent of adult tooth loss. It is characterized by swollen, inflamed gums surrounding the teeth. Plaque, a sticky substance that forms in the mouth from food, saliva and bacteria gets inside the space between the gum line and the tooth. If not removed, plaque hardens into a substance called calculus or tartar that is very difficult to remove. Eventually, the bacteria in the plaque and tartar eat away at the fibers that hold the gums to the teeth, creating deep pockets. As bacteria spread, the pockets become deeper until the bacteria finally eat away the bone that holds the tooth in place. Think of it as if bugs are eating away at the soil around a tree trunk. Eventually, they eat away all of the soil and part of the tree’s roots, causing the tree to collapse. Diagnosis Gum disease is diagnosed through a process that measures the depth of the pockets around each tooth. Pockets that are greater than 3 millimeters in depth are considered hazardous and will generally require treatment. The early detection and prevention of gum disease is another reason to see your dentist regularly. Treatment Gum disease is treated by carefully removing the bacteria and substances that form in the pockets around the teeth. The removal of this material occurs on a microscopic level and requires great skill. Our dental team has had advanced training regarding how to effectively remove all of the bacteria. This process of removing the bacteria usually requires several visits to our office. Once the bacteria has been removed, the pockets must be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis by your dentist. Otherwise, the bacteria will return. Long-Term Care Keep in mind that once you have contracted periodontal disease, you will always have the disease due to the damage that it does to your body. Careful daily hygiene and regular dental visits to clean your pockets are required to keep the bacteria from returning. After the initial dental appointments to remove the bacteria, you will be placed on a regular appointment schedule called “periodontal maintenance” to keep your pockets free of bacteria. Remember, it is always better to prevent disease than to treat disease.

Snoring - More Than Just Noise Snoring is caused when the jaw opens and the tongue falls into the back of the throat, causing the airway to narrow and forcing air through the small opening. This creates vibrations in the throat known as snoring. Although snoring seems physically harmless, it can be a warning sign of a more serious and dangerous condition called obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway completely collapses, blocking airflow into the lungs. The harder one tries to breathe, the tighter the airway seals. This airway obstruction persists until the brain partially awakens the person, unconsciously closing the jaw and returning the tongue and throat to a normal position. The sleep apnea cycle - falling asleep, jaw relaxing, airway collapsing, unconsciously awaking with a gasp, falling back asleep - can repeat itself 50 or more times per hour during the night. With a blocked passageway, one does not receive enough oxygen. Both the awakenings and oxygen deprivation can then trigger other health problems, including chronic sleepiness, headaches, depression, exhaustion, high blood pressure, and even strokes and heart attacks. Effective Treatment For many patients the first line of treatment for sleep apnea is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device. Many patients do not tolerate the inconvience and discomfort of CPAP devices. For patients who do not do well with CPAP, oral appliances, also known as dental appliances, may be an option. An oral appliance is a piece of acrylic or silicone that fits in your mouth and opens your airway during sleep. Research has shown that long-term use of oral appliances can help control mild to moderate sleep apnea more than 80 percent of the time.

  Why Choose a Cosmetic Denture: People are more conscious today about the appearance of their smile than ever before. This is a result of procedures like teeth whitening and porcelain veneers that have become more popular. Improving the appearance of natural teeth is not the only way to have a great smile, however. Advancements in dental technology now allow skilled professionals to create dentures that can look as beautiful as natural teeth. A well made denture is not only comfortable and functions properly; it will also allow the wearer to smile with confidence knowing that their smile is no different than it would be with natural teeth. Creating a cosmetic denture is really an art in the hands of a skilled dentist. The results are rewarding for the patient, and to the dentist who crafts the denture as well. What Makes a Denture a Cosmetic Denture? When a tooth is lost, the bone that surrounds the tooth is also lost to some degree. The combination of tooth and bone loss tends to give the face a 'sunk in' look. Professionally crafted denture teeth are seated in a well made base, and will together return support to the lips and cheeks, eliminating deep facial creases and an aged appearance. A well made cosmetic denture has often been called a non-surgical face lift -- it really can return a youthful appearance to the patient. The quality of the teeth used in a denture plays a critical role in the natural look of the denture. Real teeth are not uniform in color. Not only do they have variation in intensity of color in different parts of the tooth, they also have translucency and surface texture. A premium quality denture tooth can be almost indistinguishable from a natural one. An average quality denture tooth will not usually provide the same appearance. The selection of teeth and their arrangement is also very important. Denture teeth are available in many different shapes and sizes. Teeth that look natural for one person may look very unnatural for someone else. The size, shape and complexion of a person's face influences what works for one person, but not another. Other factors, such as simulated wear facets and how the teeth are arranged can also affect how pleasing a denture looks. Not everyone looks good with perfectly straight teeth.
